Modern Family Diary - S1 Ep3

Episode Title: The Bicycle Thief

There's a lot of stereotyping in this show, whether it's Mexicans or Gays who are the victims.

Jay usually is the instigator. But man, he's funny when he is. In this episode, he not only emasculates Luke for riding his girly bike, but he takes a shot at Mexicans in such a clever way. Gloria tries to get Jay to fix Manny's fan, but Jay struggles. Gloria takes a shot at Jay, saying he lives too comfortably and doesn't do enough on his own. Interesting, since she's incredibly spoiled. I guess she's forgiven because she's a woman (just kidding, ladies. Kind of.).

So Jay delivers the funniest line of the episode when he retorts by saying he's that way because he's always hired Mexicans to do the work for him. Man, I know I should feel guilty for how hilarious I think that joke is, but I don't.

This is a great episode that contrasts our characters, though. Throughout the episode, Manny is talking up his biological father, who promised to take him to Disneyland on a surprise visit. Manny isn't direct in his slights to Jay, but he might as well be. Jay does everything he can not to try and compare himself to Manny's dad, nor bad-mouth him. There's even an ugly moment when Jay yells at him and expresses his disdain for having him around.

But later, when Manny's dad bails, and Jay is the one who has to see that sad face on his stepson, he steps up to the plate and delivers. When Jay, Gloria and Manny are heading home after their fun day at Disneyland, Manny falls asleep and lays on Jay. It's a small, yet touching moment, and you feel the warmth Gloria feels in her heart when she looks at them.

Jay is at his finest by insulting Luke's girly bike and saying how he hires people from Gloria's culture because those men learn to do things for themselves, but Jay won't fix Manny's fan with him. And that means Manny sits on the bed reading the instructions and talking up a visit from his biological father.

Cam and Mitch deal with trying to fit in during Toddler Time at a playclass. They try to dial down the gay stuff, as if they are ashamed of who they are, which is weird to me. It's not like the parents are unaware of their situation. But I bet there's never a situation in which gays feel 100 percent comfortable among straight people, which is a shame. Well, unless other gays are around, like when another, far more lively, gay couple shows up to the class and lights up the room to a group of now-endearing straight parents.

It's also funny when Cam flips out over a mom saying she didn't like Meryl Streep's performance.
